The Meadow, Chesham
Man of the Match:
|Shane Gore||1||Paul Walker||Chesham went down to their third successive 1-0 defeat. This was another game of few chances but Corby took one of theirs and Chesham rarely looked like pulling back the deficit. With Alex Brown ruled out by the injury sustained at Cambridge and Dave Fotheringham away at a wedding, Tommy Fletcher moved to the centre of defence, Ashley Smith to right back and Ryan Towner and Andy Ballard both made their first starts in midfield. Ryan Blake was fit again so came in for Mark Nwokeji up front. Ryan Laville made his debut as a substitute in the second half – he scored both Hemel Hempstead’s goals in the 2013 play-off when he was known as Ryan Charles.
Chesham had the upper hand in the early stages but too often the forwards were caught offside. After eight minutes Ryan Blake set up Ryan Towner who drew the keeper but the ball was cleared and Ashley Smith shot wide. After 13 minutes Corby’s Edi Appleton escaped with a yellow card after a foul on Simon Thomas that looked two-footed. Chesham continued to have the upper hand but created little, apart from an effort over the bar by Ryan Blake from Ashley Smith’s cross. In the next minute Corby threatened for the first time when Akin Daramola shot over from Shane Byrne’s pass, then Greg Mills’ solo run from the half-way line ended with Shane Gore coming out from his goal to block.
Early in the second half Corby had the upper hand but without threatening the Chesham goal. However shortly after the hour mark Akin Daramola set up Shane Byrne, who shot low into the corner of the net from the edge of the area for the game’s only goal. Shortly afterwards Mark Bell tested keeper Paul Walker with a shot from just inside the area after a David Lynn throw was cleared. Chesham’s cause was not helped when Mark Bell limped off after a nasty challenge by Daramola, who played the ball but followed through onto the player’s shin. Andy Ballard then shot over after Ryan Blake’s shot was blocked, but Corby should have wrapped the game up when Ben Milnes squared to Spencer Weir-Daley who miskicked with only Shane Gore to beat. In the 89th minute Stephan Hamilton crossed from deep, the ball was not cleared and Ryan Laville’s shot had Walker beaten but hit the post and bounced across goal.
