Chesham moved into the last eight of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup with this narrow win in a game that was more competitive than most in this competition. Chesham’s winner produced a remarkable amount of whingeing from the home team but the referee actually got the decision right.
There were a few changes to the starting line-up in the interests of squad rotation, with four first-team regulars on the bench and Simon Thomas given the night off. Shane Gore was made captain while Andy Leese missed a game for only the second time since taking over as manager. Chesham took the lead after just 65 seconds when Bruce Wilson crossed from the right, John Kyriacou missed his kick but the ball came to Steve Wales who stroked it into the corner of the net. Chesham were dominant in the early stages, Brad Wadkins finding space to lob over keeper Jon Beames but also over the bar, but after 11 minutes Danny Seaward’s 25-yard shot was deflected over, and the resulting corner came to Lee Henderson who hooked the ball over the bar from beyond the far post...Report
Seven wins in the eight games last month has seen Chesham United Reserves named as Molten Spartan South Midlands League 'Team of the Month' for October. The run included six league victories and progress in the Challenge Trophy where they now face a home quarter final against Leverstock Green or Risborough Rangers.
There was further recognition of the talent coming through the Chesham youth system last week. Following regional trial matches, Tom Fouhy from the South Midlands Team and Ben Mooney Youth Team captain , were selected for the 34 man selection weekend for the English Schools FA National Under 18s Representative Team. The Selection weekend will take place at the National Training Centre at Lilleshall in December where matches will be played against the RAF and Navy under 25s squads. 16 year old goalkeeper Tom Gowan also took part in last week's regional trial games, a great achievement as he was competing with boys two years older. Meanwhile, two more Youth teamers, goalkeeper Josh Thompson and striker Ryan Moody, both represented Berks & Bucks Under 18s against Middlesex last weekend.
Reserve team boss Steve Benitez is delighted with the way his young side is developing. Many of the side have stepped up from under 18s football to play in the men's Spartan League against established, experienced first team sides and are showing already that there is enormous potential. "The average age is only around 20 and they have come together as a new side this season. As the youngest team in the league this is a wonderful achievement all round as most of our players have never played men's football before this season.
"The whole idea of the reserve side is to give young players a chance to learn their trade, make mistakes so that they can grow and learn. We are trying to keep the side as young as possible and with players coming through like Tom McConway 17, Jordon Gill 18, Tom Bambury 18, Matt Lench 18, Tom Fouhy 18, Sam Barker 19, Lewis Rolfe 19, and the rest all but one being under 25 we have a bright future.
"Don't forget this is a new side with only two players from the squad that played last year and to be sitting sixth in the league is a great achievement by the lads."
Chesham United's Under 18s are in action at The Meadow against Cockfosters on Thursday 17th November, kick off 7.45pm.
The Reserve side continue their Spartan League campaign with a visit to Cranfield United on Saturday before commencing their defence of the Wycombe Senior Cup trophy, when they entertain Chalfont Wasps at The Meadow next Tuesday 22nd November, kick off 7.45pm.

Chesham’s 100% home league record is still intact, but only just. Not for the first time this season, Chesham needed a late goal to secure victory against one of the division’s strugglers. This was not a convincing display, but Chesham produced two moments of quality in the 90 minutes and these led to the two goals.
Danny Talbot returned to the side after missing the FA Trophy replay at Tiverton, and Paul Robinson started in place of Simon Thomas in the only two changes to the side. Only three of Cirencester’s side played in the reverse fixture three months ago. The first moment of action came in the 13th minute when Chesham took the lead, Leon Archer sending Steve Wales away down the right then running into the area to meet the resulting cross to side-foot into the net. However seven minutes later James Mortimer-Jones too a free kick on the visitors’ right, the ball bounced up in the air and Paul Robinson caught Charlie Comyn-Platt with his elbow to concede a penalty... Chesham United Football Club is surprised and disappointed to announce that the Southern League has declared that we must re-host the abandoned league fixture with Redditch United. At this precise moment we are awaiting clarification as to the league rules or precedents that led to the decision that the match should be replayed in light of the position of the game at the time, the circumstances for the abandonment and the financial implications for both clubs.
The Board of Directors will be discussing match arrangements over the next couple of days, including decisions about admission fees for the game, understanding that supporters have already paid to watch this match, three weeks ago. However, before making any rash decisions, thought needs to be given to the financial implications. As disappointed and surprised as we are by the decision, we must not lose focus from our aims for the season. Indeed, had the original match been played out to a predicted conclusion, we would have gone into last weekend's cup fixtures top of the league, and we would again be playing Cirencester Town this Saturday with the prize of going top of the league. We must overcome this feeling of frustration and disappointment, put this whole situation behind us, and focus on our quest for promotion.
As a Director of Chesham United Football Club, Southern League Board member Brian McCarthy was not present for the decision, but made his feelings known to the Board upon his return to the meeting.
The re-arranged match will take place at The Meadow on Tuesday 6th December, 7.45pm kick-off.
There was further recognition of the progress being made by Gary Breeden and Paul Deverrick with the youngsters this week. Under 18s goalkeeper Tom Gowan, who is just 16, was selected to represent the FA Midlands region schools team in an England trial match against the FA Northern schools whilst youth team captain Ben Mooney was chosen for the FA South East region to face the South West. The regional selection is based on the location of their schools. Both games take place this coming Saturday and, if successful, the boys will be invited to be part of the 30 man England schools' squad based at Lilleshall.
Our other youth team goalkeeper, Josh Thompson, along with centre forward Ryan Moody recently represented the Berks & Bucks FA Under 18s against Oxfordshire and both have also been selected for Saturday’s FA County Youth Cup 2nd Round match against Middlesex at Uxbridge FC. Congratulations to all the boys.
The Under 18s are in action at The Meadow tonight when they take on Berkhamsted, kick off 7.45pm.

Chesham’s long midweek trip to the west country proved fruitless as a 93rd minute goal saw them go out of the FA Trophy. Chesham fell victim to a sucker punch after dominating the second half without breaking through.
Rob Bartley returned after suspension in place of Danny Gudgeon, and Scott Thomas came in for Danny Talbot who missed the game to attend a family funeral. Tiverton’s starting line-up and bench were unchanged from the first game..... Full Report

Chesham’s 100% home record this season came to an end, and the team’s unbeaten record at the Meadow which stretches back 14 months was severely tested, curiously by a Tiverton side in the bottom half of the South and West division. Chesham were second best for long periods in this game and a draw was the very least that the visitors deserved.
James Potton returned to the side after missing the midweek League Cup win over Slough, while Danny Gudgeon replaced the suspended Rob Bartley. The game kicked off 15 minutes late after the M5 crash meant that the visitors’ coach did not arrive at the ground until 2.30..Report

Chesham made it through to the second round of the Red Insure Cup on a forgettable evening in Beaconsfield. Although it took an own goal and a penalty to win the game, Chesham were on top for most of the evening and were ahead for 79 of the 90 minutes.
There was just one change to the team, Chris Watters coming in for James Potton who was away, although if you believe the Slough announcer Chesham have a new full-back called John Karaoke. Chesham started well and had some early success down he flanks, but their opening goal in the seventh minute was a gift. Dave Fotheringham sent Chris Watters away down the left, and the resulting cross was headed into his own net by David Woozley..Report
With Oxford City having progressed to the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup our fixture at home on Saturday 12th November has been cancelled. Bedford Town 0-4 Chesham United. Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Danny Talbot
Chesham swept away struggling Bedford with a near-faultless performance. Chesham took an early lead which they never looked like losing, and underlined their superiority with a further three goals in the second half.

In the Spartan South Midlands League Chesham's reserves beat Wodson Park 3-0 at The Meadow with the goals coming from Brad Holt, Tobi Akin and Curt Dozom.
Tiverton Town beat Aylesbury 2-1 last night so they will visit The Meadow in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy on Saturday 5th November. Tiverton are currently 13th in the South & West Division of the Evo-Stik League Southern. Elsewhere last night Weymouth beat Oxford City 1-0 and Cambridge City won 3-2 at AFC Totton which means just four points now separate the top seven sides.
In the Spartan League the Reserves' six match winning run came to an end as they went down 4-0 at Langford on a night of some remarkable results. St Albans City Reserves won 11-0 against Sun Postal Sports and Cockfosters vs Wodson Park ended up 7-3. Full Spartan League results.

Chesham cruised into the next round of the FA Trophy with a win that was as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. Horsham are second from bottom of the Ryman League premier division after taking only one point from their last eight games, and once Chesham got their noses in front there was only going to be one result.
Following the abandonment of Saturday's game v Redditch United we are obviously all still in a state of shock, and eager to find out what the decision will be regarding the re-arrangement of the match.
Whereas as individuals we will all have our views and opinions on what should happen, Chesham United Football Club fully appreciate that this decision will be made by the Southern League, no doubt after consultation with the FA and the Referee's Report of the game. As much as we would all like a decision to be made quickly, we understand that it is possible that it may be weeks rather than days before a final decision is announced.
Appreciating the disappointment and frustration of supporters who attended the game, we hope you join us in understanding the procedures that need to take place. We wish the referee, Chris Wicks, well and hope that he recovers from the situation and returns to the middle of the pitch soon. As soon as we have any more news we will be sure to share it with you.

Following the 4-0 victory over Newport Pagnall on Thursday both Josh Thompson and Ryan Moody have been selected to play for the Berks and Bucks County under 18 side against Oxfordshire at North Leigh FC on 29th October. Both boys impressed the management team who were watching the game, in what turned out to be a thrilling victory. Congratulations to both. With most of last year's league and cup winning side having reaqched the age limit this year's side is almost completely new with many of the team only 16. Many of last year's team have progressed to the new Spartan League reserve set up already with several competing for the first team squad. It's the way we want to develop the youth side of the club by providing structured progression routes to senior football for any players who show the ability and application. Any young players between 16-18 years old who would like to try out for our youth team can find out more, along with contact details, on the Under 18s home page.

Chesham United return to League action on Tuesday night, looking to build on their current top six position, following the disappointment of Saturday’s FA Cup defeat at Dunstable Town, a game that Chairman Alan Calder walked to with fellow Director Mike Warrick and his wife Laura.
“The feet are still sore and the disappointment of the result still hurts” commented Chairman Alan Calder. “It was a long eight hour walk, with no stops, at one stage it looked like we might not even arrive in time for kick-off! At the end of it all it was hugely frustrating to see that we did not do ourselves full justice in the FA Cup in front of decent away support, but that is Cup football, and we have certainly not been the only side to fall victim to lower league opposition this season”
Manager Andy Leese was equally disappointed with the outcome: “We know we did not perform as we can on Saturday. We did not underestimate Dunstable who have a number of very experienced players in their ranks, and to suggest other wise is disingenuous. We know it was not acceptable, and the FA Cup is proving a difficult competition for us to progress in each season. We are all bitterly disappointed with the result, and we let ourselves down as well as the club and the travelling support. We can handle the criticism, and we will use this week to test the character of the squad we have here. We have two intense local derbies, and that requires mentally tough players to respond after Saturday”
The walk to the game raised money towards the Aaron West Goalkeeping Academy and community projects around the club and Alan Calder was philosophical about the day’s events. “Walking all that way, approximately 20 miles in the end, gives you plenty of thinking time, in particular as to why we were doing it; it helps you prioritise what is important in life. I was so disappointed that the day did not finish on a high, and there is no denying that the prize money would have come in handy. We have a chance to bounce straight back on Tuesday night, after exceeding expectations last year, we have got ourselves into a position where we are genuine promotion contenders and we need to turn our focus back to building on our league success of the past two years… And maybe pick up some prize money in the FA Trophy!”
Chesham United have today re-signed striker Paul Robinson. After originally signing in February this year and making his Chesham debut in a 1-1 draw at Brackley, the 32 year old striker joined us for pre-season before moving back to his native North East. This season he has been playing for Jarrow in the Northern Football League First Division. Andy Leese took the opportunity to add to his squad after he returned to live in this part of the country again. "Paul has a real affinity with the club, and we will assess his fitness this week in Reserve games, starting today at London Lions. He has been playing in Newcastle, and he tells me he has been keeping fit. There is no doubt he can score goals, but we need him to have the work ethic he showed early in pre-season.” Tonight's Spartan League game with London Lions is played at Broxbourne Borough's ground with a 7.45pm kick off.
A couple of years after swearing that he would never do another one (the walk in the rain to Leighton Town wasn't very pleasant!) Club chairman Alan Calder will once more be putting on the hiking boots. For the FA Cup match at Dunstable he will be walking to the game on Saturday 1st October. Fellow Director and Supporters' Trust committee member Mike Warrick will also be undertaking the walk and anyone else is welcome to join in. Although it's short notice the FA Cup draw has given a fixture that we can reach on foot at a reasonable time of year. The walk will raise funds for the club and also for the Aaron West Goalkeeping Academy. Many will remember that Aaron from Amersham lost his battle with a rare form of cancer last year and his family and friends have set up the registered charity to provide a facility in his name to help young footballers. Here at Chesham United we were delighted to offer them use of The Meadow for a fundraising match last season. Look out for pledge forms at Saturday's game with Evesham or email Alan direct if you would like to offer sponsorship or take part.

Chesham United have been drawn away to Spartan South Midlands Premier Division side Dunstable Town in the 2nd Qualifying round of the FA Cup. The tie takes place on Saturday 1st October.
Chesham made heavy weather of beating their opponents from the Combined Counties League first division. At 3-1 Chesham seemed to think that the game was over, only to be caught when the visitors scored a second twelve minutes from time. In the end Chesham were holding on for a narrow victory, as Staines Lammas took the plaudits while Chesham took their place in the next round.
There were two changes to the team, Chris Watters returning in place of Anthony Watson and James Potton replacing Bruce Wilson who was away at a wedding, so Steve Wales was only on the bench after his return from suspension... Report
Chesham fought back after conceding a first-minute goal to record their first away win since March. There were some similarities to last Saturday’s game, as Chesham went behind early on and struggled for a while, but after equalising were the better team for the rest of the game.Report

Chesham kept up their 100% home record, but had to overcome a sluggish start and a worrying vulnerability at corners to do so. Once Brad Wadkins had equalised shortly before the half-hour mark Chesham played the better football, but did not wrap up the win until ten minutes from time, when Weymouth gambled with a double substitution and Chesham took immediate advantage. Golden Goal season tickets are still available to buy - the draw to allocate the times for each entry will take place at the Supporters' Trust AGM on Wednesday 14th September. With a quarter of an hour to go nobody would have predicted this scoreline. At that stage Chesham were one up against a Stourbridge side that had created little with eleven men, but were down to ten and looked well beaten. What happened then resulted in a lengthy inquest after the game as Chesham managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. http://forums.cheshamunited.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6686
Chesham also unveiled the new season's kit for the first time bearing the name of this season's shirt sponsor, Murray's Accounting Services. Shirts are available to order from the club shop priced at £30 or £25 for Supporters' Trust members.
After two goals in the opening six minutes this looked set to be an open encounter, but appearances turned out to be deceptive. It probably did not help that both sides were playing their sixth match in 17 days, but the longer the game went on the less chance there was of a goal at either end. Full report
Chesham made it three wins out of three at home this season, but this was a very different affair to the midweek win over Cambridge City. Against a Swindon side who were bottom of the table and came with a very negative formation, Chesham struggled for long periods but an own goal and a fine effort from Bruce Wilson eventually secured the points in the second half.
The starting line-up and the subs bench were unchanged. The opening stages were largely uneventful, but in the twelfth minute Steve Wales crossed from the left touchline to Leon Archer who went for a first-time shot but missed his kick. Four minutes later Wales again crossed from the left and Dave Fotheringham stole in but could only deflect the ball wide of the near post... Report

Chesham continued their winning ways with this narrow but deserved win over the league newcomers. As a club Barwell made their debut at this level, but a number of their players have experience of this division and they proved difficult to break down. However Chesham had most of the possession and Barwell’s Liam Castle was by far the busier of the two keepers. Full report

Chesham United start their Pre-Season Fixtures in winning ways against the Crystal Palace Academy team. Bucks Examiner match report.
Chesham United go into Friday night's opening pre-season friendly against the Crystal Palace FC Academy side (15th July, kick off 7.30pm) boosted by news that another of last year's team has committed to a contract at The Meadow. Rob Bartley enjoyed an outstanding season after coming off the bench in the opening day victory at Truro City following an injury to Neil Sharp. The 21 year old Bucks New University student went on to make the central defensive position his own, claiming United's Young Player of the Year award in the process. Rob has signed a one year deal, joining Danny Talbot, Shane Gore and Steve Wales on contract with Chesham United.
United manager Andy Leese is delighted with how preparation is going for the new campaign: "We have been back in pre-season training for the last week, and the players look to be in really good condition. Most of last season's squad have returned, which is great news. One or two are still away, but by the end of this week we should have seen everyone we expect to see. One player we look like losing is Paul Robinson. He is returning to the North East for personal reasons. We will miss his infectious character about the place, and on a personal note I hope he continues to play the game he loves.
"Aaron Couch is currently at Hayes and Yeading as he looks to see if he can progress in the game. There are a number of players we are looking at in training this week, and we are also taking the chance to assess some of our Reserve and Youth team players who did well towards the end of last season to see if they can improve the squad.
"In the meantime we have added some new faces as we look to liven up the competition for places and improve on what we did last year. One area we needed to improve on from last year is the amount of goals we score. We did not get enough as a team last year, and it affected us at critical times of the season. It is down to us to work harder on that aspect of the game, but we have been looking at who we can add to help solve that issue.
"We are pleased to announce that Bruce Wilson, 27, has agreed to join us from Hemel. Bruce is a player we have tried to sign before, and he has the experience, the quality and the winning mentality we need to push on. He can play in a number of positions, and we think he will add some goals to the side.
" Scott Thomas is a young midfield player who can play any role in that area of the pitch. He has been with Bruce at both Hemel and Windsor, and we think he can really challenge the players in there at the moment.
"26 year old defender Anthony Watson has been playing for Evesham in our League for the last few seasons. Having relocated to London, we have taken the opportunity to offer him the chance to stay at this level. He is very experienced, and has been part of a defence at Evesham that has been very disciplined for a number of years.
"Simon Thomas is a 26 year old forward who has played professionally in recent seasons, and I am delighted he has agreed to join us. Simon played Non League before getting a move to Crystal Palace. It did not quite work out for Simon at that level, and he drifted back into Non League last year. I am sure after talking to him, and others who know him, he is ready again to show the form that earned him a move into full time football. He has settled quickly as he knows a number of our players. He offers some presence and pace, which we need in this League, and his record suggests he will be amongst the goals."
After last year's league and cup winning season, Chesham United's Under 18s will begin their pre-season training on 19th July at Chesham Grammar School. Any players over 16 years old who are still under 18 on the 31st August 2011 can qualify for this side and are welcome to come along to try out for the team at the training sessions. More information and contact details are on the Youth Team webpage.
Subject to ratification by the member clubs at the AGM on June 18th, Chesham United has been accepted for membership of the Molten Spartan South Midlands League next season. The Generals’ reserve side will play in Division One, step six of the non-league pyramid, three levels below the first team in the Southern League Premier Division.
The move into the pyramid structure is the latest part of the club’s strategy for developing a route from youth football to the senior side for the best local talent. Providing this infrastructure was one of the key objectives the club’s Supporters’ Trust set for first team manager Andy Leese when the fans took control of the club last summer. With the Under 18s having completed a league and cup double last year with several players having potential to reach the first team this provides an ideal opportunity to continue their development with a move into competitive senior men’s football.
In January Andy Leese appointed Steve Benitez as reserve team manager. Steve is a former professional player with Brentford, Luton and Aldershot as well as with Cadiz in Spain. He has also played in Portugal and the USA and currently runs a football academy helping young players released by professional clubs get back into the game. At the same time former Chesham youth and reserve player Ross Eames, a sports coaching graduate, was brought in to assist with the reserves and provide technical support across all the teams.
The new management team have had a great start after settling into the new roles. United’s reserves finished the season with an 11 match unbeaten run including a 4-1 victory over runaway league champions Boreham Wood. They also picked up the Wycombe Senior Cup after beating Chalfont Wasps, another step six side, in the final at Adams Park.
Andy Leese is delighted with the progress being made. “It is fantastic news that our Reserves have been admitted to the SSML structure. It is a League I know well from my early days in management, and it will provide us with the platform for our younger players to develop their football education in a very competitive environment every week. We have a very talented management team in Steve and Ross and I know they will rise to the challenges of running a young side in a first team Division.
“Having seen the players we have coming through the Club I am sure everyone will benefit. This represents another step of progress for the Club as we seek to provide a pathway for young talented footballers in the Community."
Club chairman Alan Calder welcomed the news as a boost for the club as a whole, "Entering the Reserves side into the South Midlands League Division One, a recognised step in the football pyramid was mooted around Christmas time when we were without a manager and concerned about the success and profile of the Second XI, both in terms of success at bringing players through to the first team and in generating an interest amongst supporters.
"The prospect of having the Reserve side playing at Step 6 against a lot of local sides - now just one division below our traditional local rivals Aylesbury United - is a mouth-watering prospect and will give supporters who cannot always travel to away games with the First team an opportunity to watch a good quality of football at The Meadow each week. In Steve and Ross we have a fantastic management duo who I believe will enjoy competing at this level, and who will also be successful in it."
Steve Benitez is already planning for the step up next season. “This is great news for the club all around. It will help attract new players, keep young players in the club and provide the existing reserve squad with a fresh opportunity. It will also help us bridge the gap between the first team and reserves. It is a step up for me and a challenge that Ross and I will relish. We’re looking forward to playing some more exciting, winning football!”
