End of Season Message from Andy

Saturday 5th May 2012

The Promotion dream for this season finally ended last night at AFC Totton. It is tough to take, both the frustration and disappointment after 9 months hard work. The Players feel it as well, and they were devastated at the end of the game. I have no complaints or regrets on the night. We set up correctly, we played well, but the fine margins of missed chances and mistakes ultimately cost us. We have to use the disappointment to motivate us for next season. We have shown we are one of the best 5 teams in the division, despite being written off many times. We have improved on last season, we have competed every week at the top end of the table and every game of a long season has had something riding on it.

The Players deserve huge credit for the Season. They have played some fantastic football with very few off days. They work hard in training, they sacrifice time aplenty to travel to games, especially in midweek, and they have a great affinity with the Supporters. That is why it is pleasure for me, Jon and Adam to work with them every week. I think they deserved better for their efforts, but they can look back on a great season. There is a good mix of youth and experience, but above all else there are honest committed players who enjoy being part of the Club. I watched them disembark the team Coach in the early hours of this morning, and I witnessed the real spirit and togetherness in the group as they thanked travelling fans and each other for their efforts this season.

The Club has shown itself to be in good shape as well. That is just as important in the current climate of Non League football. Alan Calder and latterly Brian McCarthy as Chairmen, and the Board have been very professional and supportive of what we have tried to do. The infrastructure at the Club is first class, and of course the support for the team has been outstanding. That was typified by the support last night, where not for the first time, the vocal backing was fantastic. The players respond to it, and I hope they have given you something back with the winning days.Whilst we have enjoyed this season, we need a few more winning days if we are to progress again. There has to be some pain before the gain, and I want to use the frustration of this week to motivate us further. I'm going to reflect on the season with Jon and Adam and see where we can do things better. Many thanks to all who have contributed to it.

AFC Totton 3 - 2 Chesham United

Saturday 5th May 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Chris Watters

Chesham bowed out of the play-offs after this narrow defeat in an enthralling encounter. Chesham had cause to curse the officiating as at least one major decision went against them, and were the better side for long periods of the game. However the defeat could also be put down to defensive errors which presented the home side with two of their goals.

There was just one change to the team, with Leon Archer returning up front and James Potton dropping back in place of Danny Talbot. Chesham started stronger and in the second minute Chris Watters crossed to Simon Thomas whose header hit the bar. In the next minute another Watters cross found James Potton at the far post, who controlled and fired in a drive that home keeper James Bittner beat away. In the sixth minute Leon Archer got on the end of a Simon Thomas flick, beat Bittner and was about to roll the ball into the empty net when he was tripped by Ross Bottomley....Report

Tom & Ben help England Schools to Centenary Shield victory

Sunday 29th April 2012

Chesham United's Ben Mooney and Tom Fouhy both featured in the England Schools Under 18s side that beat Eire 2-1 at Brighton's new Amex Stadium last Thursday to win the Centenary Shield home international tournament for the first time in four years. The result gave England three wins and one loss from the four match tournament. Scotland were beaten at Newcastle United 2-0 and Northern Ireland 0-4 at Windsor Park following an opening loss 1-0 against Wales.

Pictured before the Northern Ireland game, Tom is top row second left and Ben bottom row second left.

Leamington 3 - 2 Chesham United

Sunday 29th April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Mark Lambert

This was an afternoon of conflicting emotions, as Chesham lost on a ground where they have still to take a point and thus failed to guarantee a place in the play-offs. However results elsewhere ensured that they were in the play-offs anyway. This was a game of little incident apart from the five goals, and Chesham lost the game in a ten-minute spell just after half-time.

With John Kyriacou ruled out by the injury sustained in Tuesday’s game, Danny Gudgeon switched to right back with Rob Bartley coming back into the centre after completing his suspension. Scott Thomas was also ruled out by injury, but Ryan Moran was fit to return on the bench after missing five matches because of a back injury and having his appendix out. There had been water on the surface in the morning but the afternoon was dry and the pitch playable although rather bumpy. There was also a strong wing blowing straight down the pitch which Chesham had behind them in the first half...Report

Chesham United 0 - 0 aet Wycombe Wanderers (2- 4 on penalties)

Wednesday 25th April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Danny Gudgeon

For the second time this season Chesham went out of a cup competition on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. Unfortunately the evening will be remembered most for some strange officiating during the penalty shoot-out.

Chesham’s starting line-up was unchanged. The referee was Chris Wicks who was taking charge of his first Chesham match since the notorious Redditch game last October. Chesham dominated the first half against a youthful Wycombe side, but had few chances to show for it. After six minutes Bruce Wilson crossed from the left to Danny Gudgeon who headed over, then John Kyriacou and Mark Lambert went for the same ball and Kyriacou picked up an injury that saw him go off a few minutes later, Scott Thomas taking over at right back...Report

Chesham United 2 - 0 Frome Town

Sunday 22nd April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

Having dropped from second to fifth last week, Chesham went back up to second with this comfortable win. Frome were safe in mid-table and were missing a few regulars, and never looked like getting anything from the game after Chesham took an early lead.

There were three changes to the starting line-up, Danny Gudgeon switching to the centre of defence and Bruce Wilson coming in at left back in place of the suspended Rob Bartley, while Dave Fotheringham and Chris Watters came in for Brad Wadkins and Scott Thomas with James Potton playing up front. Chesham had the first moment of note when Simon Thomas seized on a headed back-pass from Ryan Bennett but the ball hit keeper Darren Chitty on the chest and was cleared....Report

Wycombe Wanderers v Chesham United (Berks & Bucks Senior Cup Final)

Tuesday 17th April 2012

Cheshams' Berks & Bucks Senior Cup showdown with Wycombe Wanderers has been confirmed for Tuesday 24th April at Adams Park, Wycombe. Kick Off time is 7.45pm

Chesham progressed to the final by beating Maidenhead United from the Blue Sq South 3-0. Wycombe beat Hungerford Town 4-0 in the other Semi-Final.

Tickets are priced at £9 for Adults and £5 for Concessions (OAP's & Children). £1 from each ticket sold going to the Berks & Bucks FA's Charity, The Thames Valley Air Ambulance

Andy Leese commented "We are looking forward to the Final as it gives us a chance to play a professional club and enjoy their facilities. Our Players have the opportunity to play the type of game we like to play, but we also want to put some silverware in the Boardroom this year. We have had a good season to date with a League Cup Semi Final, a push for the promotion play offs again, and the County Cup Final adds that bit of prestige to our standing as a Club if we can win it."

Barwell 2 - 0 Chesham United

Sunday 15th April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Scott Thomas

Chesham went into this game needing five points from three games to clinch a place in the play-offs. They finished the game needing five points from two games as they were the only team among the promotion chasers to lose. The conditions did not make for good football with a hard pitch and a swirling wind, but Chesham can have no complaints after letting in two soft goals and failing to force a single save of note from the home keeper in a dismal game.

Danny Gudgeon returned from injury in place of Chris Watters, and Scott Thomas again swapped places with Dave Fotheringham. There was little to choose between the sides in the opening stages, James Potton having a shot deflected wide after Danny Talbot’s free kick had been headed out, then at the other end Shane Gore dived to his right to keep out a speculative shot from Kevin Charley...Report

Chesham United 2 - 2 St Albans City

Monday 9th April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Simon Thomas

Chesham took their unbeaten run to six games, but had to work hard for a point. Chesham were below par as the effect of playing four matches in ten days took its toll, and unusually had to rely on two goals from corners to secure a draw.

There were three changes to the side, Inih Effiong having been recalled by Boreham Wood and Danny Gudgeon injured in Saturday’s win as Arlesey, so Brad Wadkins and Chris Watters came in while Dave Fotheringham started in place of Scott Thomas. St Albans made the stronger start and in the third minute Chris Henry curled a shot just wide, then Ryan Watts crossed from the left and Simon Martin’s header bounced out off the post. Howard Newton then forced Shane Gore to dive to his right to save a fierce shot, then at the other end a Steve Wales shot was turned behind by Nick Jupp..Report

Arlesey Town 2 - 4 Chesham United

Saturday 7th April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Steve Wales

Chesham moved to second place in the league with this win over an Arlesey side that had taken 17 points from their previous seven games. Curiously considering this was a game between two in-form sides, the afternoon was full of errors at both ends, and ultimately Chesham won because they made fewer mistakes...Report

Weymouth 2 - 2 Chesham United

Tuesday 3rd April 2012

Waitrose man of the match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Ryan Moran

Chesham missed out on the chance to go second in the table. This was a less entertaining game than the scoreline might suggest and Chesham were well below their best, but they were within five minutes of victory when Mark Lambert put through his own goal. At the end of the game the home fans celebrated as if their team had won...Report
